CN100 Game of the Week: Marian Central vs. St. Patrick

IHSA Football Week 9 – Marian Central vs. St. Patrick

CHICAGO
– The final CN100 Sports regular season football broadcast of the season features two East Suburban Catholic teams in need of a win to get into the playoffs.

Marian Central (4-4, 2-4) and St. Patrick (4-4, 2-4) know what’s at stake at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hanson Stadium in Chicago: The winner is playoff-eligible; the loser’s season is over.

This high-stakes game can be seen on CN100, The Comcast Network, at Noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25. You can also watch it anytime in HD with Xfinity On Demand by clicking Get Local and CN100. X1 users, look for Get Local under the Xfinity Services tab.

Missing the playoffs would be an unfamiliar position for Marian Central. The Hurricanes have reached the postseason seven straight times and nine of the last 10 years. They went 8-3 last year. Marian Central snapped a two-game losing streak with a 21-14 win over Niles Notre Dame last week.

The offense is young at Marian. Junior running back Brian Niemaszek leads the way with 693 yards and 10 touchdowns on 102 carries. Junior quarterback Gavin Scott is 56-for-142 for 811 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also complements Niemaszek in the running game with 354 yards and six touchdowns on 85 carries.

Scott’s top two targets in the pass game are junior wide receiver AJ Golembiewski (13 catches, 257 yards, two touchdowns) and sophomore wide receivers Patsy Ricciardi (13 catches, 197 yards, two touchdowns).

Defensively, the Hurricanes are paced by senior defensive lineman Jake Bahl. Senior Wyatt Awe and junior Steve Pinter heads up the linebacker corps, while senior defensive back Anthony Caprile anchors the secondary.

"Marian is well-coached and has tough players that won’t back down from any challenge," St. Patrick coach Dan Galante said. "They run and throw the ball well, and defensively they are very aggressive. This is another great matchup of ESCC teams."

St. Patrick enters Saturday’s game looking for to return to the postseason for the first time since 2013.

The Shamrocks are in the midst of a tough slide, losing four straight after a 4-0 start to the season. The past two weeks have been particularly tough, a six-point loss to St. Viator and a three-point loss to Carmel that came after St. Patrick rallied from two scores down to make it a game.

"We have had a tough four-game stretch and lost some heartbreakers," Galante said. "Obviously if we want to extend our season we need to win."

Unlike Marian Central, St. Patrick is a senior-laden group. Senior quarterback Anthony Mazzenga runs the spread attack, throwing for 1,996 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The Shamrocks have several quality options in the passing game. Senior wide receiver Anthony Edgar leads the team with 56 catches for 873 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jon Hamilton has 42 catches for 508 yards and six touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Paddy Byrne has 28 catches for 401 yards and four touchdowns.

Senior running back Niko Childress has played in only five games, but he is in the lineup Saturday. He’s rushed for 357 yards and two touchdowns on 81 carries to lead the team.

St. Patrick is strong at linebackers on the defensive side of the ball. Seniors Ivan Gonzalez (68 tackles) and Connor Sisk (47 tackles) and junior Tom Tedesso (63 tackles) anchor that unit. Up front, senior defensive end Roc Salvo has 50 tackles. St. Patrick boasts a pair of impressive safeties as well in seniors Mike Coughlin (45 tackles) and Mike Valicento (52 tackles). Valicento is the team’s Walter Payton Award recipient.
