CN10 Game of the Week: Rolling Meadows vs. Maine West

IHSA Football Week 4 – Rolling Meadows vs. Maine West

– Since Matt Mishler took over at Rolling Meadows, the Mustangs have reached the playoffs the past five seasons.

This year, the Mustangs are looking to take the next step into elite territory. They’ve started strong by outscoring St. Viator, Conant and Maine East 126-28 in starting off 3-0.

Their next challenge comes from Maine West. See the Mustangs and Warriors on CN100, The Comcast Network, at Noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, and 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19. You can also watch it anytime in HD with Xfinity On Demand by clicking Get Local and CN100. X1 users, look for Get Local under the Xfinity Services tab.

"Right now we are playing very well, but we still have a lot of improvements to make," Mishler said. "Our goal is to get better every day and every rep in practice."

The offense has been solid and balanced behind senior quarterback Asher O’Hara, who has thrown 22-for-35 for 324 yards and five touchdowns, while adding two scores on the ground. Senior running back Kevin Lacosse carries the backfield load, rushing for 247 yards and two touchdowns in 38 carries.

O’Hara spreads the ball around in the passing game as five different players have four catches each to lead the team. Senior Marco Taibi paces the receiving attack with 90 yards and two touchdowns. Seniors Devonte Amos, Jose Camacho, Blake Holfeld and Logan Reese also have four catches.

"Our offense struggled against St. Viator, but has been extremely efficient the last two weeks," Mishler said.

Senior linebacker Kevin Haltman leads the defense with 26 tackles, 12 solo, 2 ½ sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown. Senior safety Justin Thompson has 17 tackles, 10 solo and three tackles for loss. Senior defensive end Jesus Delatorre contributed 14 tackles and 1 ½ sacks and junior cornerback Willis Goodwin has two interceptions in the first three weeks.

"Our defense has been doing a great job of setting the tone for us all season long," Mishler said. "We have eight takeaways and three defensive scores if you count two blocked punt touchdowns. They have been giving our offense great field position all year."

Maine West (2-1) is not a traditional power, having not reached the postseason since 2002 and only four times ever. This year could be different, however. The Warriors got out of the gate fast with wins over Proviso East and Larkin before stumbling against Hoffman Estates last week, 48-13.

"We got off to a good start and saw solid development from week one to week two," Maine West coach Jason Kradman said. "We did some really nice things on defense to get us to 2-0 and our offense was able to execute at a higher level in week two. We believe we’re headed in the right direction. Unfortunately, we had a big setback this past week against Hoffman Estates and let the game get away from us."

Senior quarterback Sam Kindle triggers the offense. He’s 25-for-49 for 257 yards and four touchdowns, one coming on the ground. Senior running back Anthony Henley gets the tough yards, already going for 417 yards and three touchdowns in 59 carries.

Junior tight end Matt Kentgen leads the team with 13 catches for 150 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors will miss their x-factor, senior Marteen Robinson, who is out with an injury. He’s rushed for 241 yards and two scores, caught five passes for 61 yards, made 11 tackles and returns kicks and punts.

Senior defensive end Malik Siem (16 tackles, four sacks), junior defensive back Matt Litas (12 tackles) and sophomore middle linebacker Jacob Belizzi (10 tackles) lead the way defensively.
